Introduction:

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, energy is our most precious commodity. Yet, many of us find ourselves struggling with fatigue and mid-day slumps. What if I told you that the key to sustained energy lies within our own bodies? It's true! By understanding how our bodies metabolize carbohydrates, we can unlock a reservoir of boundless energy to fuel our daily activities.

           The Power of Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates serve as the primary fuel source for our bodies, providing the energy necessary for everything from basic metabolic functions to high-intensity workouts. But not all carbs are created equal. Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and sugary snacks, offer a quick energy boost followed by a crash, leaving us feeling tired and hungry. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates, found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, provide a steady stream of energy, keeping us feeling full and focused throughout the day.

            Deciphering Metabolism:

The process of carbohydrate metabolism is a fascinating journey that begins the moment we take our first bite. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which is then used by our cells for energy or stored for later use. The speed at which this process occurs can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as metabolism rate and insulin sensitivity.

           Personalized Approach:

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to carbohydrate intake. Each of us has unique needs based on our activity level, metabolism, and dietary preferences. By tuning into our bodies and understanding how they respond to different types of carbohydrates, we can tailor our diet to optimize energy levels and overall wellness.

            Optimizing Energy:

So, how can we harness the power of carbohydrate metabolism to unlock our full energy potential? Start by incorporating more complex carbohydrates into your diet, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. These nutrient-rich foods provide sustained energy without the energy crashes associated with refined carbs. Experiment with timing your carbohydrate intake to coincide with periods of increased activity, such as before a workout or during a busy workday.

           Conclusion:

By mastering the art of carbohydrate metabolism, we hold the key to unleashing our full energy potential. Let's embark on this journey together, armed with knowledge and empowered to make smart choices that fuel our bodies and minds. Say goodbye to fatigue and hello to boundless energy!

Saturated fats, predominantly found in animal products, have been linked to adverse health effects such as high cholesterol and heart disease. On the other hand, unsaturated fats, abundant in foods like avocados and nuts, offer numerous health benefits, including cardiovascular protection.

           Introduction:

In the realm of heart health, sodium often plays the role of a hidden adversary. While essential for bodily functions, excessive sodium intake can pose significant risks, particularly for individuals predisposed to sodium sensitivity. But what if I told you that understanding your genetic predisposition to sodium sensitivity could hold a potential key to managing blood pressure and safeguarding heart health? Let's delve into the intricate relationship between genetics, sodium sensitivity, and cardiovascular wellness.

           Unveil Your Heart's Secret Weapon:

Sodium sensitivity, a trait influenced by genetic factors, may significantly impact how our bodies respond to sodium intake. By unraveling this genetic predisposition, we gain invaluable insights that empower us to make proactive choices to protect our heart health. Imagine the peace of mind that comes from knowing you're equipped with the knowledge to support your most vital organ.

           Deciphering the Sodium Code:

Sodium, often lurking in our favorite foods, can wreak havoc on our cardiovascular system if not managed properly. Understanding sodium sensitivity allows us to navigate dietary choices with precision, opting for low-sodium alternatives that promote heart health. By embracing a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, we can mitigate the risks associated with excessive sodium intake and lay the foundation for lifelong wellness.

Lactose, the sugar found in dairy products, serves as the magical key that unlocks the goodness of dairy. Yet, not everyone's body handles lactose in the same way. By delving into our lactose tolerance, we gain the power to revolutionize our dairy consumption, ensuring that every bite brings pleasure and nourishment without the burden of discomfort or bloating.

Lactose tolerance, akin to a secret code, dictates how our bodies handle dairy. Some individuals possess the genetic ability to digest lactose seamlessly, while others may experience digestive symptoms indicative of lactose intolerance. Understanding this distinction empowers us to make informed choices about our dairy consumption, tailoring our intake for digestive ease and enjoyment.

Lactose tolerance hinges on the presence or absence of lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose in the digestive system. Individuals with sufficient lactase activity can digest lactose without issue, whereas those with reduced or absent lactase activity may experience digestive discomfort after consuming dairy.

Armed with knowledge about our lactose tolerance, we can navigate the dairy aisle with confidence. Whether it's enjoying a creamy latte, indulging in a cheesy pizza, or opting for lactose-free alternatives, understanding our lactose tolerance allows us to craft a dairy consumption plan that aligns with our digestive needs and preferences.

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous bodily functions. While magnesium can be obtained through diet, some individuals may not consume enough, leading to potential deficiencies and therefore requiring additional supplementation for optimal health.

Magnesium comes in different forms, including salt forms like magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate as well as chelate forms like magnesium glycinate. Salt forms are produced by combining magnesium with other substances, like oxygen (in the case of magnesium oxide) or citric acid (in magnesium citrate). They are often affordable and have high magnesium content, but they can sometimes cause stomach upset and have lower absorption rates. Chelate forms, on the other hand, bind magnesium to amino acids or organic acids, potentially improving absorption and reducing the risk of stomach discomfort. While chelate forms may be more expensive, they offer better absorption and gentler effects on the stomach compared to salt forms like magnesium oxide.

How Magnesium Glycinate Supports Heart Health

Magnesium plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular health. Magnesium glycinate is a special kind of magnesium that's really good for our heart. When we take magnesium glycinate, it helps our body in many ways. One important thing it does is it helps our heart muscles work well. Our heart is like a pump that sends blood all around our body. Magnesium glycinate helps this pump work smoothly and keeps our heart beating steadily. It also does something cool—it helps the smooth muscles of our heart relax. Our heart has muscles that need to contract and relax at the right times to pump blood effectively. Magnesium glycinate helps with this relaxing part, which is important for a healthy heart. It works hand in hand with calcium, another mineral our body needs. Calcium helps our heart muscles contract, while magnesium glycinate helps them relax. So, taking magnesium glycinate can be really good for our heart health because it supports the important jobs our heart does every day, like keeping a steady beat and pumping blood around our body efficiently.

Considering that high blood pressure stands as a notable cardiovascular risk factor, magnesium glycinate emerges as a potential key player in its regulation. Magnesium glycinate facilitates the relaxation of blood vessels, diminishing resistance in arteries, thereby promoting smoother blood flow. This, in turn, contributes significantly to sustaining healthy blood pressure levels, emphasizing the multifaceted benefits of magnesium glycinate in cardiovascular well-being.

Magnesium Glycinate's Role in Enhancing Brain Function

Magnesium glycinate distinguishes itself as a more optimal form to support cognitive function due to its potential to traverse the blood-brain barrier. This unique characteristic enhances its bioavailability in the brain, allowing it to play a vital role in bolstering memory, concentration, and overall brain health.

Magnesium is like a brain booster that helps our thinking and memory. When we have enough magnesium in our body, it helps our brain work better in many ways. One important thing it does is it helps nerve signals travel smoothly in our brain, kind of like making sure messages are sent and received properly. This means we can think clearly and remember things better. Magnesium also helps our brain make new connections between nerve cells, which is important for learning new things and solving problems. Additionally, magnesium helps regulate important chemicals in our brain, like neurotransmitters, which are like messengers that help our brain cells communicate with each other. So, having enough magnesium in our body can really support our brainpower and help us think sharper and remember more.

Magnesium Glycinate and the Path to Mental Well-Being

Magnesium glycinate goes beyond helping the brain – it also supports our mental well-being. Magnesium has a calming effect on our nerves, and when combined with glycine, it becomes a powerful team with stress reducing potential as it may be more likely to cross the blood brain barrier compared to other forms.

Magnesium may play a crucial role in supporting mental health, particularly through its interaction with a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA for short. GABA is like a calming messenger in our brain that helps reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. When we have enough magnesium in our body, it helps activate GABA receptors in our brain, which means GABA can do its job better. This helps calm down our nervous system and can make us feel more relaxed and less anxious. So, magnesium acts like a helper for GABA, making sure it can work properly to keep our mood balanced and our mind calm. When we're low on magnesium, it can disrupt this process, leading to feelings of anxiety or stress. Therefore, ensuring we have enough magnesium in our body can be really important for maintaining good mental health and emotional well-being.

Experts from the American Diabetes Association say that 1.5 million people will be told they have diabetes this year. 1 That can be scary. But knowing that you have diabetes lets you start getting it under control. Taking care of diabetes can seem complicated. It is important to learn as much as possible about diabetes so you can make good decisions about taking care of yourself. You need decide what will work for you. Your plan will probably include taking medication and making small changes in the way you eat and move during the day. These can make a big difference. Your doctor, pharmacist and other members of your health care team are key people use as you get started.

           What is diabetes?

Most people have heard about diabetes. But what exactly is diabetes? Diabetes happens when glucose or the sugar that we get from the foods that we eat, builds up in the bloodstream to an unhealthy range. The build-up is caused when glucose can’t get inside the cells of the body. Our cells need glucose for energy. Insulin is a hormone that is made by the body. In normal times, it lets the glucose get inside the cells. In diabetes, the body either does not make enough (or any) insulin or has trouble using the insulin the body does make. Many people think that high blood sugar only happens if a person eats or drinks too many foods and beverages that have extra sugar added. This is not true. Many foods, including healthy options like milk, fruit, vegetables and whole grains are broken down into glucose. The glucose from those foods can build up and cause high blood glucose when there is a problem with insulin. Long-term, high blood sugar can cause serious health problems. 2 There are two main types of diabetes. They are called type 1 or type 2. Type 1 is the less common type of diabetes. It usually starts during childhood and can run in families. In type 1 diabetes the body stops making insulin completely. Type 2 diabetes is much more common and usually happens in adults. Type 2 diabetes can happen in younger people too, especially if the person is overweight or obese. In this type of diabetes, the body usually can still make some insulin. The amount may be too small, or the cells may have trouble using it. With diabetes, other serious health problems can happen if the blood glucose is not controlled. High blood glucose can damage many parts of the body, including the eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels. It is very important to work with your entire health care team on a plan to keep the glucose in the blood as normal as possible. This will help avoid damage to the other parts of the body.

           Take control of your diabetes

Taking any medications that your doctor or other provider recommends correctly is very important. Work with your pharmacist to know exactly how to take the medications and about any monitoring you should do. You should also know how to handle any side effects that can happen. Some medications for diabetes need to be injected with a syringe or a pen device. Your pharmacist can help you learn how to do this safely and

Checking your blood sugar and making small changes to the way you eat and live can have a big effect on

your blood glucose and overall health. Some simple changes to think about are listed below:

             Move more.

It is always important to check with your doctor or other health care provider before starting a new strenuous exercise plan, especially if you have other health conditions. But most people can benefit from adding extra physical activity into your day. Simple changes are taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from the entry of your work, home or shopping center or doing an extra lap around the grocery store. If you are already doing those things, consider planning an after lunch or dinner walk or another activity that keeps you moving. Many people use a smartwatch or other device that counts steps and set a goal of slowly increasing the number of steps to take in a day. The key is to make the activity fun and to work to improve each day.

             Eat well.

Simple changes are a place to start when eating with diabetes. Because everyone is different, there is no one diabetes diet to use. Experts from the American Diabetes Association recommend 4 basic guidelines when you are getting started 3:

            Include fruits and non-starchy vegetable

Choose more lean meats or plant-based proteins

Reduce added sugar in foods and beverages

            Reduce processed foods

Some people who have diabetes benefit from meeting with a Registered Dietitian (RD). An RD can help you

Diabetes can increase your risk of many other health problems including heart attacks and strokes. Smoking and being overweight or obese can increase these risks.5,6 If you smoke, work with your health care team to stop. If you are overweight or obese, plan to safely lose weight. Losing even a few pounds can improve your diabetes and reduce your risks. 6

When the body is under stress it makes a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol raises blood sugar and can affect cravings and your appetite.7 Taking walks, meditating, using deep breathing are all ways that can help you reduce your stress.

If needed ask for referrals to Registered Dietitians, diabetes care and education specialists and other providers including dentists, podiatrists and eye doctors who can keep you healthy with your diabetes. Be sure to also include your Health Mart pharmacist as a part of your team. Your pharmacist can help you get the most from your medications and be sure that you are taking them exactly as directed. Your pharmacist can also help answer questions and recommend products and services to stay healthy. Many pharmacists offer diabetes education or can refer you to support groups or classes to keep you on track. When you live with diabetes, be sure to surround yourself with everything you need. That includes the medications and supplies and a team that is focused on you being successful.

How to hit the gym when coping with diabetes.

When it comes to managing type 2 diabetes, exercise is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it help with weight management, but it can also improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of complications.

Before starting or changing your exercise program, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider to ensure that activities are safe for you. Once you have the green light, there are a few types of exercise that can be especially beneficial for managing type 2 diabetes.

Aerobic exercise is a great way to get your heart rate up and burn calories. Choose an activity that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, biking, or running. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise on most days of the week, or at least 150 minutes a week. This can be broken up into shorter sessions if needed - even 10 minutes of activity at a time can have benefits!

Resistance exercise is also important for managing type 2 diabetes. This type of exercise increases strength, improves balance, and makes it easier to perform everyday activities. Resistance training can include weightlifting, yoga, or calisthenics. Aim for 2 to 3 sessions of resistance exercise each week, with a focus on different muscle groups each time.

In addition to planned exercise sessions, it's important to limit inactivity throughout the day. Long periods of sitting can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels, so be sure to take breaks and move around regularly. Every 30 minutes, take a few minutes to stand up, walk around, or do some light activity. This can include simple things like stretching, marching in place, or doing a quick set of jumping jacks.

Remember, exercise doesn't have to be a chore - find activities that you enjoy and make them a regular part of your routine. Whether it's dancing, hiking, or playing a sport, staying active is a fun and important way to take care of your health. With a little creativity and a lot of determination, you can stay on track with your diabetes management and live your best life!

Diabetes & Healthy Eating

A good diet doesn't have to be hard or inconvenient with Type 2 Diabetes.

If you've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure where to start when it comes to healthy eating. But the good news is, there's no need to stress - with a few simple adjustments, you can still enjoy delicious and satisfying meals while keeping your blood sugar levels in check.

One of the most important things you can do is establish a regular schedule for meals and healthy snacks. This helps keep your blood sugar levels stable and prevents unhealthy cravings and overeating. Aim to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, and be sure to include healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, nuts, or veggies and hummus.

When planning your meals, focus on incorporating high-fiber foods such as fruits, non-starchy vegetables, and whole grains. These foods provide important nutrients and help regulate blood sugar levels. On the other hand, try to limit your intake of refined grains, starchy vegetables, and sweets. While it's okay to enjoy these foods in moderation, they can cause spikes in blood sugar levels if consumed in excess.

When it comes to protein, opt for modest servings of low-fat dairy, lean meats, and fish. These foods provide important nutrients while also helping to keep you feeling full and satisfied. And don't forget about healthy cooking oils - olive oil, canola oil, and other heart-healthy options can add flavor and nutrition to your meals.

If you're feeling unsure about how to make these adjustments, consider working with a registered dietitian. These experts can help you identify healthy food choices, plan well-balanced meals, and develop new habits to support your overall health. They can also help you monitor your carbohydrate intake, which is important for regulating blood sugar levels.

Remember, healthy eating is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to managing type 2 diabetes. With regular exercise, medication as needed, and support from your healthcare team, you can take control of your health and live a full and active life. So don't be afraid to try new recipes, experiment with different flavors, and enjoy the journey towards better health!

What Your Diabetes Medications May Mean

How is Metformin affecting you and your health?

As your hometown pharmacist, I want to make sure you're getting the most out of your meds without any pesky side effects.

Now, I know some of you have been taking metformin for a while now, and did you know that up to 1 in 14 of you might be at risk for a vitamin B12 deficiency? Yikes! Don't worry though, I've got you covered.

B12 deficiency can cause all sorts of problems like anemia and neuropathy, but we don't want to go around testing everyone. Instead, let's keep it simple. If you're a vegetarian, use medications like Prilosec regularly, or elderly, or if you start feeling some numbness or tingling, let's check those B12 levels every 2 to 3 years.

Just because you might have a B12 deficiency, it doesn't mean you have to stop taking your metformin. The benefits of your medicine are worth it! If you are taking metformin as part of your diabetes treatment plan, check with a member of your healthcare team to determine if oral or sublingual over-the-counter supplements are right for you! A dose of 1000 to 2000 mcg/day are just as effective as the injectable kind for mild to moderate cases. No need to break the bank with that fancy nasal spray that costs over $400 a month.

How to Approach Your Diabetes

"There is no one-size-fits-all approach to Type 2 Diabetes."

When it comes to managing type 2 diabetes, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. But there are a few key steps that can help keep your blood sugar in a healthy range and reduce the risk of complications. And the good news is, these steps can actually be pretty fun!

First up: healthy eating. While it's true that you'll need to make some adjustments to your diet after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice flavor or enjoyment. In fact, many people find that eating a balanced diet of whole, nutrient-dense foods actually tastes better than a diet high in processed foods and sugar. Focus on incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your meals. And don't be afraid to experiment with new recipes and flavors - there are so many delicious options out there!

Next, regular exercise is key. Not only does exercise help regulate blood sugar levels, but it can also improve cardiovascular health, boost mood, and increase energy levels. And the best part? Exercise can take many different forms, so you're sure to find something that works for you. Whether you prefer walking, swimming, yoga, weight lifting, or dancing, there's an activity out there that can help you stay active and healthy.

If you're overweight, weight loss may be a goal for you. Shedding excess pounds can improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of complications. But don't feel like you have to go it alone - working with a registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator can help you develop a safe and effective weight loss plan.

Depending on your individual needs, you may also require diabetes medication or insulin therapy. These treatments can help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications. And with advances in medicine, there are now more options than ever before, so you and your healthcare team can find a treatment plan that works for you.

Finally, blood sugar monitoring is an important part of diabetes management. Regularly checking your blood sugar levels can help you make adjustments to your diet, exercise, and medication as needed to keep levels in a healthy range.

Remember, managing type 2 diabetes is a journey. It may take some trial and error to find the right balance of diet, exercise, medication, and monitoring that works for you. But with patience, determination, and a willingness to try new things, you can take charge of your health and live a full and active life. Don't be afraid to lean on your support system and celebrate your successes along the way - you've got this!

Type 2 Diabetes: What You Need to Know

Learning what you need to know about your new diagnosis.

Hearing the news that you've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can feel like a total curveball. It's natural to feel a whirlwind of emotions as you try to process the news. But don't worry - you're not alone! After the initial diagnosis, many people are left with more questions than answers, and a handful of pamphlets that don't quite seem to provide the guidance they need.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's important to remember that what you're experiencing is completely normal. It's common to go through the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and eventually acceptance - as you come to terms with your new reality. It's okay to feel sad or frustrated that life as you knew it has changed.

One thing you may struggle with is feeling like you've failed. You might believe that you've brought this diagnosis on yourself, and that it's a result of your own actions or lifestyle. But let me clear something up for you - this is a common misconception about type 2 diabetes. It's not your fault that you've been diagnosed. There are many factors that can contribute to the development of this condition, and often, it's simply a matter of genetics or chance.

So, what comes next? It's time to start taking action. As overwhelming as this may seem, there are steps you can take to manage your condition and improve your health. With the guidance of your healthcare team, you can develop a plan for managing your blood sugar, eating a balanced diet, and incorporating exercise into your routine.

It's important to remember that managing type 2 diabetes is a journey. It may take time to find the right balance of medications and lifestyle changes that work for you. But with patience and perseverance, you can regain control of your health and live a full and happy life. Don't be afraid to reach out to your support system - whether that's friends, family, or a support group - for encouragement and guidance along the way.

Above all, remember that you are not defined by your diagnosis. Type 2 diabetes is just one part of your story, and it doesn't have to hold you back from living the life you want. Take charge of your health, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You've got this!

Allergy Medicine: What to Look For

What type of allergy medication should you be shopping for?

Ah, the joys of spring! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the flowers are in full bloom. But for millions of people, springtime also means the return of seasonal allergies. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose can put a real damper on this otherwise beautiful season. Fortunately, there are several over-the-counter remedies that can help ease allergy symptoms.

One of the most popular types of nonprescription allergy medications are oral antihistamines. These medications can help relieve sneezing, itching, a stuffy or runny nose, and watery eyes. Some of the most common oral antihistamines include cetirizine (Zyrtec Allergy), fexofenadine (Allegra Allergy), and loratadine (Claritin, Alavert).

Another type of nonprescription allergy medication are corticosteroid nasal sprays. These medications can improve nasal symptoms such as congestion and runny nose. Examples of corticosteroid nasal sprays include fluticasone propionate (Flonase Allergy Relief), budesonide (Rhinocort Allergy), and triamcinolone (Nasacort Allergy 24 Hour). If you're considering long-term use of corticosteroid nasal sprays, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider first.

Cromolyn sodium nasal spray is another option that can ease allergy symptoms by blocking the release of immune system agents that cause symptoms. This treatment works best if it's started before exposure to allergens. Although it's considered a very safe treatment, it usually needs to be used 4 to 6 times daily.

Lastly, oral decongestants such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) can provide temporary relief from nasal stuffiness. Some allergy medications even combine an antihistamine with a decongestant, such as cetirizine-pseudoephedrine (Zyrtec-D 12 Hour), fexofenadine-pseudoephedrine (Allegra-D 12 Hour Allergy and Congestion), and loratadine-pseudoephedrine (Claritin-D). If you're considering using a decongestant to treat your allergy symptoms, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider first.

While these over-the-counter remedies can provide temporary relief, it's important to remember that they may not be enough to completely eliminate your allergy symptoms. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider can help determine the best treatment plan for you based on your individual needs and medical history. So don't let seasonal allergies put a damper on your springtime fun - try one of these over-the-counter remedies today!

Allergy Season

Some helpful home remedies for the season that makes our eyes water.

It's that time of year again! Spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining. It's all sunshine and rainbows until... Ah-choo! Seasonal allergies strike again!

But fear not, my fellow allergy-sufferers! Don't let those pesky symptoms of sneezing, congestion, and runny noses get in the way of enjoying the great outdoors. Instead, try out these simple strategies to keep seasonal allergies under control!

First things first, on those dry and windy days, it's best to stay indoors. But don't fret! You can still get outside after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.

And while you're outside, avoid any gardening chores that stir up allergens, like lawn mowing or weed pulling. When you're done enjoying the great outdoors, make sure to remove your clothes and hop in the shower to rinse off any pollen from your skin and hair. And whatever you do, don't hang your laundry outside! Trust me, pollen can be a clingy little bugger.

Lastly, if you do have to venture outside for chores, rock that face mask with style and pride! Let's show those allergens who's boss and breathe easy.

The Ultimate Allergy Remedy

The ultimate cure is closer (& safer) than you might think!

Hey there! Your friendly neighborhood pharmacist here, and I have some awesome news for you! If you're looking for a natural and effective way to deal with pesky allergy symptoms, look no further than nasal irrigation!

This non-pharmacological remedy is backed by scientific evidence and has been shown to reduce those annoying symptoms like itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. By flushing out mucus and allergens, nasal irrigation can even improve your airflow and potentially lessen your need for allergy medications. How cool is that?!

Now, I know what you might be thinking, "What about brain-eating amoebas?!" But don't you worry, my friends, those cases are super rare and totally avoidable. So, go ahead and give nasal irrigation a try!

Just remember to use water that's been boiled (for 3-5 minutes and then cooled to lukewarm), distilled, or sterile. And be sure to wash your irrigation pot after every use and replace it every few months. Trust me, your sinuses will thank you for it!

Gut Health

Everything you need to know about probiotics & your guts wellbeing.

Probiotics are tiny living organisms that live in our bodies, especially in our digestive system. These organisms help us digest our food and keep our gut healthy. We can take probiotics as supplements or get them from certain foods. To be considered a probiotic, a product must contain live microorganisms that can improve our health when we take them in the right amounts. So, probiotics are good bacteria that can help us stay healthy!

Think of probiotics like a group of friendly construction workers in your gut. They help build and maintain a healthy gut environment, especially when you're taking antibiotics. Just like a good construction team, probiotics work together to get the job done and keep your gut running smoothly.

These friendly workers can prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea in about 1 in 13 patients, which is pretty impressive. But just like how every construction team has its limits, probiotics might not be able to handle every challenge that comes their way.

If you're in the market for a probiotic product, look for those that contain L. rhamnosus GG (Culturelle, etc) or S. boulardii (Florastor, etc) as they're the strongest workers on the team…..but there are plenty of products out there! Ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider which may be the best fit for you!

To get the most benefit, start taking probiotics within 2 to 3 days of starting an antibiotic and continue for about 3 days after the course. And just like how you wouldn't want your construction workers to get accidentally bulldozed, make sure to keep your antibiotics and probiotics at least 2 hours apart.

How the supplements you take can affect your brain health in the long run.

Hey there! Have you heard the news about Bruce Willis' recent dementia diagnosis? It's got a lot of people wondering if there are any supplements that can help prevent or treat dementia. As your friendly neighborhood pharmacist, I'm here to give you the lowdown on the most commonly asked about natural medicines.

But first, let's talk about what dementia is. Dementia is a condition that affects the brain and causes a decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. It can also impact a person's ability to carry out daily activities. Some signs and symptoms of dementia include forgetfulness, confusion, difficulty with language, changes in mood and behavior, and trouble with familiar tasks.

Now, let's dive into some of the natural supplements that people often ask about. Ginkgo is a popular choice, but while it may improve some symptoms of dementia like cognition and daily life activities, it doesn't seem to prevent or slow down the progression of the condition. Ginkgo may always have interactions with some of the other medications you take.

Another supplement that often comes up is Prevagen, which contains apoaequorin, a protein derived from jellyfish. Some believe it may help regulate calcium in the brain and reduce memory loss. There's one study showing that it slightly improves memory, but be cautious and don't rely solely on Prevagen for dementia prevention or treatment.

Finally, when it comes to other natural medicines like gotu kola, fish oil, and vitamin D, there isn't strong evidence supporting their use for dementia. Instead, focus on healthy lifestyle choices like staying physically, mentally, and socially active, and maintaining a well-balanced diet such as the Mediterranean diet.

Remember, if you have any concerns about your memory or thinking skills, talk to your healthcare provider. We're here to help you stay healthy and informed!

(RxWiki News) A healthy diet could add more than a decade to your life, according to a new study.

Health professionals and researchers have long known that healthy diet choices, such as eating fruits and vegetables and avoiding added sugars, could have beneficial impacts on health. Now, this study has quantified those impacts.

To be specific, this research found that a woman who began eating a healthy diet at age 20 could add a decade to her life span. And a man who did the same could add up to 13 years to his life.

The study authors noted that dietary risk factors were thought to cause roughly 11 million deaths around the world each year.

The researchers behind this study dug into the data from a global study that tracked dozens of health risk factors, hundreds of health problems and people in hundreds of countries.

They found that participants who ate more fruits and vegetables — legumes like beans and nuts, in particular — were more likely to live longer. Also, those who ate less processed meat like bacon and sausage, as well as less red meat in general, were likely to live longer.

Using their findings, the study authors created a free online calculator that you can use to estimate the impact of various dietary changes on your life span. You can try it

While it is generally a good idea to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, it's important to always discuss any major diet changes with your health care provider before you make them. For some people, certain changes in diet can be unhealthy or even dangerous.

This study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine.
